Camryn Manheim Instagram – Certain theatrical events are seared into our consciousness. The play I saw tonight, Counting and Cracking was one of them.
There are no words I can impart that will do it justice. It is a magnificent piece of theater. So beautiful, so in your face and yet somehow so nuanced. It is funny but heartbreaking, simple but shattering, and it takes flight the moment it begins.
Counting and Cracking tells a gripping international story of a cultural rift, of war and diaspora, of family and politics. It splits its focus between several time periods and across continents. In a cast of 19 performers, hailing from six different countries and playing a total of 50 characters. I don’t have enough positive adjectives in my vocabulary to accurately describe how stunning the actors were. One mind blowing performance after another.
It’s a breathtaking tail of generational trauma. But it’s the joy and spirit of the production that makes Counting and Cracking so memorable and moving.
There is so much love in this production. And the directing team should take a bow for the wonderfully playful and imaginative staging that brings the story to life. You can hear the collective sighs from the audience as the performers delight us and move us to tears. I love, love, loved it.
There are only five shows left at the Skirball Theater at NYU. I urge you to see it if you can. ❤️
