Spending time with family, creating memories, laughing, more Costco ready made meals than I can count, outside runs, and endless days of sunshine and surfing has made this summer the best one yet. You gave my kids the summer I always wanted for them, I believe it will be a core memory. As a parent I want to fill their childhoods with love, happiness, and adventure so when hard things befall them in the future they can always remember what happiness feels like and know that it exists. My only regret is that you sped by way too quick and now it will be another 11 months before we meet again. In the meantime I look forward to many more Julys to come and happy memories to make. The second picture is from the last official timed half marathon I ran. I was pregnant with my youngest daughter and every step of the way was a struggle! Fast forward to today I halved my time, set a PB, and had a blast. When I began running I was not fast at all, in fact my youngest brother could out walk my run. I’m so proud of the running journey I’ve been on, today makes all the early mornings, tired afternoons, hours and hours of running and speed training feel like and perhaps serves me as a reminder that if I make up my mind and commit to a goal and stay consistent anything is possible.

What a bittersweet day the first day of school is! On the one hand if I hear “I’m bored, there’s nothing to do, I want a snack!” One more time I might cry and scream so the thought of school is a blessed relief. On the other hand a new school year feels very definitive in marking each one of my children as another year older and that means childhood is fading which makes me feel like crying. Safety should always be an ongoing conversation within our families, but it’s easy to forget about it during summer activities. Especially if you feel like you are always with them. A few things to consider chatting about with them might be: Who are safe people? What can you do if you are scared? Do you know the difference between a secret and a surprise? Does anyone have the right to touch you? What they do if they can’t find you or get in contact with you. This short list is by no means complete, but a good place to start. I think working to continually hold our children’s trust in us, and maintain open and honest communication can make all the difference when it comes to undesirable circumstances and dangerous people.
