Melinda Gates Instagram – This #HumanRightsDay, we are thinking about the 12 million girls around the world who are forced to enter into child marriages every year.
Child marriage threatens girls’ health and safety, prevents them from getting an education, and can lead to them, their families, and their entire communities getting stuck in a cycle of poverty.
This time last year, we traveled to Malawi and South Africa to help bring more attention to this serious — and often overlooked — global issue to hear directly from our partners who are on the front lines working to end child marriage. We remain so inspired by the amazing girls and women we met, and the courageous advocates sharing their stories and raising attention about their plight.
Just a few weeks ago, Malawi launched a revitalized national strategy to end child marriage. In the past year, we’ve also seen countries including Colombia, Sierra Leone, the Central African Republic, and Zambia take steps to address this issue.
Every girl deserves the chance to determine her own future. That is only possible in a world without child marriage. As a global community, let’s recommit ourselves to ending child marriage once and for all. | Posted on 11/Dec/2024 01:30:11
