Nicola Correia Damude Instagram – I was crossing the street yesterday and guy in a car yelled “Get out of the road fattie”. It’s crazy how, even though I’m a grown ass woman who knows the guy is a tool, it still upset me. It brought back terrible memories of my childhood bullying flooding back and an old familiar feeling of shame. But I’m far enough along in my journey that I was able to pretty quickly move on, reminding myself that “hurt people, hurt people”. That men cutting Women down to feel powerful is about them and not us. And that the whole incident had nothing to do with me. BUT, what I also realized is that had he yelled anything else, had he yelled “You’re too tall”, “your style sucks” or even “You’re ugly”, I would have just laughed and brushed it off as the stupidity of a sad little man. It wouldn’t have even registered. But small men know as well as we do how impossible body standards, diet culture and body shaming have damaged Women’s self-esteem. It was because I have this cultural fat phobia that it affected me. I would rather someone tell me that I’m stupid, mean, arrogant or un-talented than for someone to call me fat. And that’s “F#%KED UP! It’s similar to how we’d rather irreparably damage our bodies with dieting than live in healthier bigger bodies. It’s a cultural sickness and it’s wrong. I’d like to thank my friend @jimivere for introducing me to the term for a guy like the one who yelled at me on the street. “Douche Canoe”. He was a Douche Canoe. But so is this culture for Women. So I’m going to keep working to love myself and to focus on the voices that life me up. And I’m here to lift you up if you need it! Stand tall Friends. You are the perfect you!❤️💪🏽
