Pacific Palisades isn’t a place you expect to simply disappear one day. It was a beautiful neighborhood. The loss is as shocking as it is devastating. I imagine the trauma of people who woke up yesterday thinking it was a normal day, then next thing they knew it was all disappearing in front of their eyes — terrifying, life-threatening, almost incomprehensible. You come to expect forest fires, living in California. But this was something so beyond what we have seen before. My heart goes out to everyone there. The parents, the children, the animals, the businesses, the firemen. God Bless every one of you. Dear God, Please give comfort, hope, And peace To those enduring this agonizing hour. Amen God Bless California 🙏
I grew up in a home where all the aunts and uncles and cousins had breakfast together on Sunday morning. This would be a common conversation: One of my uncles would say, “Don’t listen to your father, kids. You’ll never make a dime!” Then my father would say, “Don’t listen to your uncle, kids. He won’t survive the revolution!” Then my mother would walk in and say, “So who wants white fish and who wants roast beef?” The climax of the conversation? “Okay, let’s eat!” In other words, there was always political cross-talk, political arguing, defense of or scorn directed at this political figure or another. But there was a firewall between all of that, and any kind of personal animosity. The hatred we’re directing at other people for no other reason than that they have the audacity to disagree with us, is so toxic at this point that it’s destroying the fabric of our society. No one owes it to us to agree with us! And no one has a monopoly on truth! Judgement should be saved for unjust systems, not individuals. At this point, it’s becoming emotionally unsafe to even express an opinion anymore. Politics and political sharing should not be a psychological blood sport. Is that the world we want to bequeath to our children? This is a time for processing, for listening, for thinking, and yes, for many of us, for praying. This country is in trouble, everybody knows that, and the people who disagree with us aren’t automatically our enemies. The next 70whatever days are going to be so awful if we don’t get control of ourselves. And after that, oh my God. We decry the divisiveness, yet we divide ourselves constantly. I think the most important thing we can do today is forgive each other, have some mercy on each other, give each other the benefit of the doubt. Everybody is hurting in some way, and no one is perfect. Let’s try to show some respect. And show some love.

Living through this phenomenal moment…
I knew Maya Angelou. Not well, but we were friendly acquaintances. Once in 1998 we had a drink together in Detroit, and she told me a story. On the day of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, he was scheduled to fly from Memphis to New York City. And there was to be a party in New York for him. Maya was there. She told me about the people gathered, about the news breaking of his death, of how they shared their agony and grief. She described to me how she had felt that night. We talked about hope and hopelessness. How I wish I had a recording of her words. Hearing Maya speak to you was somehow more than just someone speaking to you. It was more like a transmission. And as she described the party, it’s as though it came alive in some three-dimensional way. The very sound of her voice held worlds. We’re so lucky to have all the audio and video that we have of Maya’s voice. And Martin’s too, for that matter. We need our past heroes now, to inspire us and nudge us along. I always get melancholy on April 4th, the day MLK died. And on November 22, when JFK died. And on June 6, when Bobby Kennedy Sr. died. With most people, every year after their passing gets easier. But with those men, every year that goes by gets harder – because everything we feared would happen when they died, has happened. I shared that thought with Maya as we sat together that night on the couch at the Ritz Carlton bar in Dearborn. We looked at each other and shared a few seconds of silence. Sitting in silence with Maya was like sitting in silence with God. I remembered that story today, as I read Maya’s quote below. It felt like a message from her when I read it, a bit of a nudge, a bit of a “Buck up.” Even in her silence she shared such power. And even in death she still does. “If you must look back, do so forgivingly. If you will look forward, do so prayerfully. But the wisest course would be to be in the present in the present gratefully.” The last time I saw her, Maya asked me for a prayer. Today she answered mine.

I’ve been a grassroots activist for over 35 years. l founded non-profits and funded them, served on their boards, and worked on projects including AIDS activism, racial reconciliation groups, anti-hunger and anti-poverty, established a campaign for a U.S. Dept. of Peace, produced The Sister Giant conferences introducing thousands of women to political activism, and created a Progressive Candidate Summit supporting Congressional candidates. From starting an organization that has fed over 18 million meals to homebound people with AIDS and other life-challenging illnesses, to visiting the slums of Kenya while attending a micro-credit conference on global poverty, my eyes have seen. Through those experiences, plus my work as a non-denominational spiritual leader addressing large groups as well as counseling individuals, I’ve known a lot of good people simply struggling to survive. And at the same time, because I had become successful as an author and was living in L.A., I found myself exposed to some of the wealthiest, most powerful people in the world. I’ve traveled a few times on private planes and yachts. I’ve spent a night at the White House and a weekend at Camp David. I had the privilege of gaining that magic potion called “access.” All of this gave me a unique perspective on America, having spent quality time among both the most advantaged as well as the least advantaged people among us. Over the years, the experiences of my life turned into one long “Aha!” moment. A light was gradually turned on in my mind, literally over a span of decades, as each experience added to my understanding: “Oh, this is how America operates…!” But don’t get me wrong: None of this is about good people versus bad people. No socio-economic group has a monopoly on moral values. Not every rich person is a greedy bastard, and not every struggling person in the workplace is a working-class hero. Einstein said we would not solve the problems of the world from the level of thinking we were at when we created them. Spirituality and psychotherapy at their peak are the same thing, both having to do with a healing of the mind. No fundamental external change will occur without a massive healing of the heart. Spirituality isn’t a separate category of existence; it speaks to the underground river of consciousness that either feeds or depletes our individual and societal life force. The universal theme at the heart of all the great religions and spiritual traditions are love and mercy and dedication to justice. How ironic, and how horrible, that religions created to promote such themes have become tools of separation rather than conduits of unity. So we must do the work ourselves. As the Dalai Lama said, “To save the world. we must have a plan, but no plan will work unless we meditate.” Whatever our spiritual or religious process, it’s vital now. The world will not change unless we do. “The Mystic Jesus” is an exploration of the metaphysical, psychotherapeutic meaning of one who has been trapped for too long within the narrow confines of institutional religion. Seen through the lens of the mystical heart, he is not so much a religious figure as a universal spiritual force. In rethinking him, we rethink ourselves and we rethink the world. When I was a child my sister and I had Russian dolls. They were the kind where small wooden dolls were inside larger wooden dolls were inside larger wooden dolls were inside larger wooden dolls were inside larger wooden dolls were inside larger wooden dolls. That’s a bit how life works. Your emotional life is inside your psychological state is inside your physical health is inside your family is inside your friendships is inside your work is inside your community is inside your country’s politics is inside the global climate is inside the state of world events. Much easier to handle all that when it’s just dolls; with dolls, they’re wooden and none of them are falling apart. In real life, if enough of the pieces are weakened then the whole system begins to break down. Of course bad things happen, and they always did. But if you have a good relationship you can better handle sorrow, if you have good mental health you can better handle sickness, if you have a good government you can better handle a community crisis, if you have a good overall climate you can better handle individual storms. What we’re experiencing now is an all-systems breakdown, and it requires an all systems response. None of the areas are going to fundamentally improve unless all of the areas begin to improve. If a fourteen year old shoots and kills his teachers and fellow students at school, you can’t separate it from the father who gave him the gun, but also you can’t separate it from a lack of mental health treatment, you can’t separate it from the economic and social systems the father himself grew out of, you can’t separate it from the corruption in Washington that allows the NRA to have so much power, you can’t separate it from violence in the media, you can’t separate it from the emotional and psychological violence on social media, and on and on and on. The rot these days is deep inside the wood. And no one but ourselves can dig it out. I’m reminded of a quote by the Dalai Lama. He said, “In order to save the world we must have a plan. This is a difficult time for a lot of people, and for good reason. There’s a toxicity and a falsity that permeate the world, making it hard for the soul to breathe freely. Cultivating sacred space is a necessity for a peaceful life. Despite whatever painful wreckage of outer circumstances, whether in our personal or in our collective lives, there is the eternal possibility for new beginnings. Spiritual understanding is impregnated with the force of material possibility, over and over again in the conception of new dimensions of life. New hope. New realties. Faith isn’t blind, it’s visionary… a belief in things as yet unseen. Conception occurs within the body. Seeds are planted within the ground. New possibilities are imagined in the mind. The most creative actions occur in the dark, unseen by the physical eye but destined to come to light. Even when it’s tomb time, for you or for the world around you, the alchemy of the cave is rich and miraculous. The dark night of the soul carries its own kind of power. So never forget, and never lose hope. The glory of morning is guaranteed.

Today is National Women’s Equality Day, observed on August 26 each year to mark the adoption of the 19th Amendment in 1920 that granted women the right to vote. But the march for equal rights for woman goes beyond just voting. Its major frontier today has to do with two things: reproductive rights, and passing the ERA! Hopefully our first woman President will call the archivist and direct her to publish the ERA during her first 100 days in office.
