Sarah Carter Instagram – Yesterday a dear friend called me a high flying bird… I felt seen… instead of misunderstood… my whole life I have felt most at home in the sky… literally… on planes… or figuratively… in my imagination… between worlds… what happens in the sky stays in the sky… no matter where we take off from or where we might land… flying is where it’s at… and most people don’t agree… so it has felt like my secret place… the sky… the desert… the ocean… the unknown… for anyone afraid of flying… afraid of dying even… maybe open your heart a little wider… talk to the stranger beside you… tell them you are afraid… believe them when they tell you it’s ok… smile back at them… make them laugh… notice the miracle… make yourself laugh at the insanity of trying to figure it all out… let go… be curious… we are here now… soaring… not in control.
I’ve been in the desert the past few days where the sky is consuming… no separation betwen what is and what isn’t… I’m clearly a small part of something unfathomable out here… alone… but aware of all of it… inseparable.
I’m celebrating my brother’s birthday with him out here… we have always flown together and we still are… I do miss the sound of his voice and his laugh and his hugs and the way he smelled… a bit like weed and cigarettes but mostly like nice cologne… I miss waiting for his texts telling me he’s alive… as if I’m ridiculous for worrying about him… I miss him being the strong one… I miss his birthday cards and I miss the presents he would send for Alice… but I have to tell you… he really is here with me between worlds… and because of him… because he left this world where we play music and go to concerts together… I spend most of my days with my heart wide open to him in the sky… and when I’m in concerts with thousands of people I can feel the true size of the music… the unfathomable soaring spirit of the whole thing… and I feel even more at home and more at peace… not having to hang onto anything… flying.
I hope for everyone who has lost someone in their precious world… that you can find them in the sky.
