‘Winds of Change’
My objective was to demonstrate an interactive storytelling session with a group of children. A technique i use, that works like magic, is turning the spotlight on the child or children listening, luring them into the story with fun antics, asking questions so they feel and emote what the characters of the story are experiencing.
The book i chose to reenact is my own children’s hot favorite, ‘The Day The Crayons Called It Quits’. In this wonderfully crafted narrative, a set of crayons write very expressive letters to their young owner, Duncon. They express weariness, grief, anger, concern, happiness, anxiety, enthusiasm, love and a whole range of emotions with belly tickling wit and humor. As i opened each page of the letters, the voice of the crayons became that of the children — their empathy for the crayons heightened, and they heard their own voices heard. This with a receptive audience of academics, the hall came alive with imagination, curiosity, life lessons and laughs!
It was pure joy for us all !
