Trust your instincts. One of the best, of many, lessons I learned from my acting teachers was to always trust my instincts. It’s what creates unique characters. Don’t just do what the writer or director is telling you to do, but what are your instincts telling you to do. Trust that! I offer that to any artist coming into or already established in this business. Happy Anniversary mom and dad. What a love testimony you two have. Met at Fisk University, and you told Mom the moment you met her, you knew you wanted to marry her. Now, that was probably some Kappa (👌🏾) smooth talk you were spitting at her, but it worked. You built a family and stayed together until you drew your last breath, PaPa. Your long lasting love still continues to set an example for us. The good, the bad, the ugly… you were the epitome of, in sickness and in health until death do us part. Still processing, but one thing remains true… I LOVE these people that came together to make THE BLOOD QUILT. We became FAMILY. And for a play like this, it was necessary to become so. I love Gio. People asked me time after time, how I could play Gio each night. “You must be exhausted,” they’d ask me? and yes, I was… believe me, I was. Her emotional and storied journey each performance was a load to carry, but I did it with honor. Through me, I felt like I was connecting to and healing parts of me that had been abused, traumatized and suffered life’s misfortunes. But I also experienced life’s joy and laughter through her. She was healing and hopefully, by me connecting to my pain, I was giving space for others to connect to theirs, and thus heal. This journey… this story… this character was like none other that I’ve ever played. She allowed me to be free in so many ways, and for that I’m truly grateful. As I said, I’m still processing, but I hold this experience and these people dear to me. Thank you to all the lovely souls pictured and not pictured here.
