Beverly Joubert Instagram – Every moment we spend with elephants we’re reminded of their intelligence and the intricate complexity of their social connections. The gentle touch of a trunk can communicate so much. Elephants fulfil an integral role in African ecosystems, not just as landscape engineers that aid other species, but as icons with which it’s difficult not to become deeply attached. Over and above their obvious physical stature, they exude an emotional and intellectual depth and complexity expressed through behaviours that mirror our own human emotions and social bonds. They are an irreplaceable keystone species, and when we lose that presence, the void is vast. Some estimates tell us that Africa’s elephants have declined by 77%, on average, in the past five decades. It’s impossible to comprehend the full extent of that loss. But we know that the world is a poorer place without them.
