Imagine you’re driving, and you see someone severely injured in a road accident. What would you do? Would you step up to help, knowing it could save their life, or hesitate, fearing police or legal issues? Well, if you save the life of a road accident victim by rushing them to the hospital, the government not only protects you under the Good Samaritan Rules but also rewards you with ₹5000 and a certificate of appreciation. Recently, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that this amount will soon be revised to ₹25,000. To claim this reward, you’ll need an acknowledgement letter from the police station. Some important details from the rules: Eligibility: Any individual who has saved the life of a victim of a fatal accident involving a motor vehicle by administering immediate assistance and rushing them to the hospital within the Golden Hour of the accident to provide medical treatment. Definition of Golden Hour: As per Motor Vehicle Act section 2(12A), the “Golden Hour” means the time period lasting one hour following a traumatic injury during which there is the highest likelihood of preventing death by providing prompt medical care. Definition of Fatal Accident: Any road accident involving a motor vehicle leading to any of the following conditions during treatment to the victim, with a certificate of fatality issued by the hospital: • Major surgery involved • Minimum three days of hospitalization • Brain injuries • Spinal cord injuries So, next time, don’t think twice before helping someone in need.
