Debra Messing Instagram – Last Thursday, we had a full house here at The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Cultural Center for a special screening of the new documentary film, “October H8TE” (@octoberh8te), which highlights the explosion of antisemitism on college campuses, across social media, and in the streets of America in the aftermath of October 7th.
The screening, which received a rousing standing ovation from our audience, was followed by an insightful talkback with the film’s director Wendy Sachs (@wsachs), former UCSB student body president and film participant Tessa Veksler (@tessaveksler), and actress, activist, and executive producer Debra Messing (@therealdebramessing).
During the discussion, Debra reflected on being an activist for 30 years and how proud she was to march alongside marginalized communities, only to find that many of those same people were nowhere to be found after October 7th. This eye-opening experience reshaped her understanding of allyship and reinforced a vital truth: the Jewish community must be united by pride. She emphasized that now more than ever, we must stand strong, lift each other up, and embrace those who stand with us — drowning them in love and gratitude. Because allyship isn’t just given; it’s built.
