Debra Messing Instagram – This is Gerda Weissman Klein. She is one of the most important people I have ever had the privilege to meet and know.
I met her when I was in 6th grade. She came to our temple in RI to share her story of being a young girl in the Holocaust. She had written her biography, “All But My Life.” I wrote a book report on it, and it changed me.
Gerda was an extraordinary woman. She went on to win an Oscar for her documentary. “One Survivor Remembers.”
Do yourself a favor and look up her acceptance speech.
But first, watch this. She recounts the moment she was liberated from Auschwitz by a young soldier, Kurt, who would become her husband.
Gerda died recently. I had the pleasure of meeting her daughter at an evening where I spoke about Gerda in my speech. Gerda left behind a big, beautiful family, and a generous heart. But most importantly, she left behind her story.
We must share every survivors’ story, for every generation to come, so we never forget the evil that man can do, and the strength, resilience and grace of every extraordinary survivor.
The stories are ours.
Never Again
