My earliest childhood memories are of people asking me about marriage, as if getting married to a man would be the greatest accomplishment I would have in life. Partnership and marriage can be lovely things, but they shouldn’t be the benchmark for human potential. Growing up, the gender roles were clear— men make the money and therefore they call the shots. But that never worked for me because I like calling my own damn shots. Furthermore, I’ve done enough traveling with my charity around the world to know that in every corner of it, one fact continuously stands out: financial freedom for women is game-changing. It should be encouraged and screamed from the rooftops, yet we seldom see it. In fact, women are often discouraged from talking about money at all. It’s not cocky or superficial, it’s necessary for us to see Brown women with the bag, so that people can stop concluding only a son can be well off. So, go make your money hunny.
