Maria Grazia Chiuri Instagram – The setup in the Barberini Library is a site-specific installation that honors and documents artisanal tradition in dialogue with the adventurous spirit of the six pioneering explorers.
The story of the travelers woven with embroidery meets the revolutionary design philosophy of designer Nanni Strada, who with her 1974 Mappamodello connects geography with patterns.
The garments worn by the six explorers were the first to be modified to enable and facilitate the movements necessary to undertake the journey.
The panels on display were created by layering linen and hemp threads, then dried and enriched with delicate kanta embroidery, making this fabric similar to ancient parchment.
Together with Karishma Swali, we studied how each embroidery and panel could tell the evolution of women’s clothing in a game of overlaps and cultural references.
A final embroidered panel reads: “Femininity, The Trap” on the pattern of a corset. A tribute to Simone de Beauvoir, who first recognized the constrictive function of femininity.
