Mary Steenburgen Instagram – It’s so hard for me to put into words the feelings I felt upon seeing my son Charlie McDowell’s film, The Summer Book, a few days ago at the AFI Festival. The film, which was made on a small island off the coast of Finland, is about a world that I know very little about. It’s a world that he has immersed himself in for years now, as he was making this beautiful film that is a cherished book by Tove Jansson. The film features stunning performances by the incandescent Glenn Close and a young girl, Emily Matthews, who had never acted before. The film is a shimmering example of when a very beautiful story, simply told, captures us completely and talks about the most basic things in life: nature, loss, love, and death. Sturla Brandth Grøvlen was the cinematographer and it’s one of the most authentically beautiful films I’ve ever seen. And yes, I am a proud mother but this film is masterful, and I congratulate everyone involved in its making (including the kid who assigned me the role of craft service for his earlier work).
