Life has been wonderfully ( and sometimes not so wonderfully) intense lately. I have been too busy to think about posting lately but today I’m going for it. The good and the bad. The good massively out weighs the bad, especially two little new babies in our life named Sonny and Tove. They are incredible blessings and we are so grateful to be a part of their little tribes. Because Ted’s show is so wonderful, and Ted in it, we ended up going to lots awards shows, including one where he received The Carol Burnett Award at the Golden Globes Gala. Sitting next to one of my comedy heroes was just so meaningful to me. She is as magnificent as you think she might be. Last night at the SAG Awards Ted didn’t win but we had an amazing evening anyway. Part of the thrill was sitting next to my dear friend, Jane Fonda, and being blown away by her beautiful acceptance speech for her lifetime achievement award. I have a shot of the Palisades Fire that I took on the day it broke out- though we were more fortunate than a lot of people, it caused so much pain and heartbreak to so many, and Ted and I are trying to do what we can to help our city that we love. The chocolate cake is an old favorite recipe and I made it for my granddaughter’s 13th birthday. There is a picture of myself and my Aunt Freda taken at her 100th birthday bash that we all threw for her in Arkansas. It’s so hard for me to put into words the feelings I felt upon seeing my son Charlie McDowell’s film, The Summer Book, a few days ago at the AFI Festival. The film, which was made on a small island off the coast of Finland, is about a world that I know very little about. It’s a world that he has immersed himself in for years now, as he was making this beautiful film that is a cherished book by Tove Jansson. The film features stunning performances by the incandescent Glenn Close and a young girl, Emily Matthews, who had never acted before. The film is a shimmering example of when a very beautiful story, simply told, captures us completely and talks about the most basic things in life: nature, loss, love, and death. Sturla Brandth Grøvlen was the cinematographer and it’s one of the most authentically beautiful films I’ve ever seen. And yes, I am a proud mother but this film is masterful, and I congratulate everyone involved in its making (including the kid who assigned me the role of craft service for his earlier work). It was grand.
