It’s been a minute. It’s been a heartbreakingly brutal time in LA. For those of you who reached out, prayed over our city and continue to do so, thank you so much. I deeply appreciate your outpouring of love and prayers.
Witnessing the people of our city organize and mobilize to help as many people as possible, has been one of the most inspiring acts of collective goodness I’ve sever seen. I am placing my hope in that, in them. The helpers, the healers, the ones who go towards the fire, the ones who go towards the need.
This month has been brutal. And it’s not over yet. So many of us are feeling disappointment, anger, grief, fear and overwhelm, as we figure out how to move forward inside so much hard.
As I look at these pictures and I recall so many being of service, I am also reminded of the how.
I think about my kids making heart shaped notes of love and encouragement, and attaching them to bear stuffies. A mother at the donation center picked up a bear for her daughter. They had lost everything. She read the card and was moved to tears.
I think about the firefighter putting out a fire with one hand, holding a dog in the other.
I think about the volunteers at every donation center, stocking tables with everything you can imagine.
I think about the high schoolers who took charge of the donation drive at my kids school. Their beautiful, compassionate hearts. And the line of parents loading up all the care packages onto trucks for families.
I think about the text chains with my besties, jumping in to help as many people as possible.
I think about strangers taking in strangers.
I think about the line of cars at the fire station dropping off water, snacks, food, supplies. Our tear-filled hugs with fire fighters, as we attempted to express our gratitude. Words will never be enough.
We are the how. We keep going towards the need. One person, one family, one community, at a time.
Stay strong, LA. Stay strong, everyone. We have a lot of work ahead, but we will get through it all… together.
