CEO and Founder of the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative, Forest Whitaker has inspired countless young men, women and children to find peaceful solutions and conflict reconciliation through the organisations innovative programming. At a recent fundraising Gala in New York, Forest said ‘My commitment to peace comes from recognising how interconnected we all are. What happens to you affects me – if not immediately, then eventually’. WPDI’s work is rooted in the belief that peace can be taught. It’s a skill – and its everyone’s responsibility. The organisation now spans 9 countries and has had a significant impact on the lives of millions of people, empowering the young and communities affected by conflict. Since 2012, WPDI has pioneered an innovative approach, mobilising young people to lead peace building lives and support development efforts within communities. South Sudan, Africa’s youngest country, after years of conflict is now striving towards peace and searching for a new way forward. WPDI has identified ways to communicate and break down barriers between communities and tribes, using sport, cinema and education projects as a successful way to broker peace and understanding. The Youth Peacemakers project has brought greater connection between countries and ethnic groups too. They successfully reach thousands of people over the course of a year through these successful conflict resolution education initiatives.
