What is UCC?
A common set of civil laws for marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption – no matter your religion or gender.
Uttarakhand – First State to Implement UCC
Introduced in Jan 2025, UCC applies the same civil rules for everyone.
It is expected to be implemented in other states of India as well as announced by Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha.
Some Key Provisions:
▪️ Equal inheritance rights for all children – sons, daughters & adopted ones.
▪️ Minimum marriage age is specified and registration within 60 days of marriage is compulsory.
▪️ Divorce grounds: cruelty, cheating, desertion, mental illness, incurable disease.
▪️ Either spouse can claim alimony based on financial need.
▪️ Live-in relationships? Mandatory registration within 30 days.
▪️ Penalties for non-compliance
Why People Support It: Gender equality & simpler laws.
Why Some Oppose It: Concerns about religious freedom & diversity.
