A much loved Palestinian bookshop in East Jerusalem was raided by the police in Israel and the booksellers were arrested and books were confiscated. This is unacceptable, totally wrong but it did not get enough attention in international media. Bookshops are among our last remaining spaces of free speech, cultural dialogue, empathy and connectivity. While I am glad that the bookseller Mahmood Muna and his young nephew were released today, I find it important that we raise our voices also for cultural spaces, bookshops and libraries. They must be protected and respected. I know this sounds like a “luxury” amidst such immense human suffering , but protecting booksellers and bookshops is important not only for a small literary community but whole humanity.
