Especially when disabled actors play disabled characters, and people with disabilities are involved in the storytelling. Sebastian stars in “A Different Man,” which tells the story of a struggling actor with neurofibromatosis, a condition causing facial disfigurement. The film also features Adam Pearson, who has lived with neurofibromatosis in real life since he was a child.
There’s significant room for growth when it comes to highlighting characters and storylines with disabilities on screen. In fact, our 2024 Film Study found that just 1% of lead characters in films with a budget over $10M have a disability. Representation matters! When disabled characters are shown—with nuance and accuracy—disabled viewers feel validated, and disability is destigmatized.
