It was an inspiring evening in Hollywood at last night’s #GoldenGlobes, especially for women over 50! 👏 An often invisible population on screen, women over 50 took center stage on the red carpet, as nominees, and as Golden Globe winners. Representation of this age group on screen has come a long way. In 2021, our research showed that male characters over 50 significantly outnumbered females in films, broadcast TV, and streaming platforms. For example, in top films from 2010 to 2020, 80% of 50-plus characters were men. We are proud to celebrate the incredible women over 50 who are dominating the industry both in front of and behind the camera. Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees last night who proudly remind us that talent, success, and beauty have no age limit. ✨ #seeitbeit
We’re kickstarting the #Emmys with a throwback to an unforgettable experience receiving the #GovernorsAward in 2022. It was an incredible honor to be recognized for our work promoting gender balance and fostering inclusion across all media. We are so proud to now celebrate Greg Berlanti, who will be honored with the 2024 Governors Award for his extensive industry work showcasing underrepresented populations. Congratulations @gberlanti, your passion and creativity continue to show viewers everywhere that If They Can See It, They Can Be It! #seeitbeit #76thEmmys #TelevisionAcademy #EmmyAwards

We love this. 👏 If you were watching the @televisionacad #Emmys last night, you saw our favorite TV moms shout out the progress TV has made in portraying moms on screen while also calling out a long-standing issue — women still aren’t making as much as their male counterparts, even in Hollywood. And while TV *has* come a long way in the way moms are represented on screen, our report with @geenadavisorg earlier this year found that there’s still a way to go before moms are accurately and authentically portrayed on TV. At @momsfirstus, we’re building a world where moms are valued and supported in our workplaces, communities, and culture. And that means changing the way moms show up on screen too. Shout out to @conniebritton, Meredith Baxter, @susankelechiwatson, and the writers who are rewriting motherhood, for paving the way. It’s time to break the cycle and make real change. 👊
When disability is authentically showcased on screen, we disrupt the narrow stereotypes so commonly assumed by audiences. Especially when disabled actors play disabled characters, and people with disabilities are involved in the storytelling. Sebastian stars in “A Different Man,” which tells the story of a struggling actor with neurofibromatosis, a condition causing facial disfigurement. The film also features Adam Pearson, who has lived with neurofibromatosis in real life since he was a child. There’s significant room for growth when it comes to highlighting characters and storylines with disabilities on screen. In fact, our 2024 Film Study found that just 1% of lead characters in films with a budget over $10M have a disability. Representation matters! When disabled characters are shown—with nuance and accuracy—disabled viewers feel validated, and disability is destigmatized. #seeitbeit #ADifferentMan #GoldenGlobes

Great actors never age out. We want to see more opportunities for 50-plus women on screen in authentic and dynamic roles. Representation of 50-plus women in prominent roles can challenge stereotypes and showcase the diversity of experiences women have throughout their lives. Expanding the roles and narratives available to 50-plus women enables entertainment media to reflect reality more authentically, in ways that audiences demand. #AcademyAwards #seeitbeit #Over50 #Oscars

If you can see it, you can be it! Actor Race Eberhardt stars in “Strait Undercover,” an action film about a government agent exposing corrupt forces trying to put a small town farmer out of business. In speaking with @today, the film’s director Ben Gonyo shared he made the decision not to mention Eberhardt’s disability in the film. “What we see traditionally in films is that the characters on screen are forced to identify with their disability, almost as the reason they’re on screen,” he said. “I feel like that’s a way that it used to be done, and we want to look forward and do it in a new way.” 👏 #StraitUndercover #seeitbeit

Yesterday marked the beginning of Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month! As we dive into this celebration of the Latinx community, follow along while we share stats and studies that highlight Latinx representation in media! #seeitbeit #Latinx
As we celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, we’re advocating for more Latinx representation in children’s TV. Our studies found that only 7.4% of characters in new children’s shows from 2022 were Latinx, which is a decline from the year prior. There is always room for more diversity, especially in showing young viewers that If They Can See It, They Can Be It. For more findings on Latinx representation, visit GeenaDavisInstitute.org. #Seeitbeit #Latinx
