Eliminating the Gatekeepers Made the Artists’ Burden Heavier
“…There’s another issue, and that is the absence of education about art for the masses. We once had taste-makers, critics, and gate-keepers to cull art and educate the public as to the manner of its appreciation. The Internet blew that apart with the wide availability of international distribution at the touch of a button. Without the gate-keeper structure, perhaps we have been exposed to a few artists we would not have otherwise known, but for the most part, it’s instead turned our once curated selection of artists into a Costco-sized swap meet of “stuff.” Each one of us as art consumers is now required to paw through this junk yard in order to find the gem or two that appeal to us. In the end, we will often reject the exhausting exercise all together in favor of work from the past that was curated by these gate-keepers of yore, nonetheless.”
