Katie Aselton Instagram – Cinematographer Sarah Whelden reflects on her collaboration with Director Katie Aselton and explains how ARRI’s ALEXA 35 played a crucial role in achieving their vision, enhancing the film’s visual storytelling:
“Despite ‘Magic Hour’ being our first collaboration, Director Katie Aselton and I instinctively understood how to tell this story. We developed a strong visual language that guided our on-set decisions, unlocking the film in real-time.
Early on, I chose the ALEXA 35 to handle the challenges of shooting in a house surrounded by desert, which we saw as a character in the film. The camera’s flexibility was crucial for exposing the desert during day interiors, especially with a small team and limited lighting.
The ALEXA 35 provided a clean image, film-like highlights, and detailed shadows, allowing me to blend the desert and interior spaces naturally. It also handled the tonalities of magic hour beautifully, giving us extra takes as light faded.
These were the key considerations in my testing, but the standout feature was its color space. We created a show LUT to distinguish the earth tones from vibrant pops of color, visually underscoring hopefulness in the barren landscape.”
🎬 “Magic Hour” makes its world premiere on March 7, opening day at SXSW! Catch it again on March 11!
