premiering MAGIC HOUR at @sxsw is a dream come true. I can’t yet even put words to how special the last 36 hours have been… to share this deeply intimate, personal story that was born out of a voice to text memo between @markduplass and me… that was captured by the most beautiful eye of @sarahmakesmovies… with the support of this incredible crew (most pictured, all tagged), centered by the heart and soul of the incomparable @daveeddiggs… it is EXACTLY where I want to be and what I want to be doing creatively. my heart is so full.

Cinematographer Sarah Whelden reflects on her collaboration with Director Katie Aselton and explains how ARRI’s ALEXA 35 played a crucial role in achieving their vision, enhancing the film’s visual storytelling: “Despite ‘Magic Hour’ being our first collaboration, Director Katie Aselton and I instinctively understood how to tell this story. We developed a strong visual language that guided our on-set decisions, unlocking the film in real-time. Early on, I chose the ALEXA 35 to handle the challenges of shooting in a house surrounded by desert, which we saw as a character in the film. The camera’s flexibility was crucial for exposing the desert during day interiors, especially with a small team and limited lighting. The ALEXA 35 provided a clean image, film-like highlights, and detailed shadows, allowing me to blend the desert and interior spaces naturally. It also handled the tonalities of magic hour beautifully, giving us extra takes as light faded. These were the key considerations in my testing, but the standout feature was its color space. We created a show LUT to distinguish the earth tones from vibrant pops of color, visually underscoring hopefulness in the barren landscape.” 🎬 “Magic Hour” makes its world premiere on March 7, opening day at SXSW! Our NATIONAL GIFT CARD DRIVE is here! Here’s how it works. Grab a used cardboard box, cut out a slot for the cards, go to our website thesoulpointsfund.org and print the Gift Card Drive image so you can tape it on. Find a spot in your community where people will see it… school, work, church, a trusted coffee shop, etc. When it gets full you can mail the cards to our PO Box and our non-profit @thesoulpointsfund will get them directly into the hands of those who need them most. Please join us. Repost this. Spread the word. Help us rebuild LA. We need you. ❤️✌️

@katieaselton talked to @theretaility about her upcoming SXSW film “Magic Hour,” which she wrote, directed, and stars in alongside @daveeddiggs. “It’s the rawest I’ve ever been,” she says. “If someone else was making ‘Magic Hour,’ I would not have been cast in it. I was lucky enough to [create it]. I wrote it for myself, and I cast myself. I directed myself—my favorite actor to work with. But no one else was going to give me that job.” She adds, “This is a story that @markduplass and I wrote together that I’ve been so passionate about for so long. [We] finally got the right group of people together to make it.” Read more at TheRetaility.com.
As many of you know, we’ve been working on the ground here in LA to get relief directly into the hands of the LA Fire victims. Unfortunately, we’re seeing the press cycle move on. Our corporate sponsors are pulling their emergency funds. It’s sad, because there is so much more to do. To this end, @katieaselton and I are donating an extra $100,000 to our non profit @thesoulpointsfund to keep up the relief. We’ll still take your unused gift cards and your tech items, but we are also set up to receive donations through our 501c3 if you’d like to match our donation and help further the work. Any amount helps! Our website thesoulpointsfund.org (link in bio) has a quick and easy donate button if you are able to help. Thank you for all you’ve done so far. – Mark, Katie, Ora and Molly Duplass ❤️✌️
