It’s December 1989, and I’ve just received my first video camera as a present. The Mirage Hotel and Casino has just opened its doors in Las Vegas, and there’s nothing quite like it at the time. As I sift through old video clips, I’m transported back to my childhood in the 70s and 80s—a time when Las Vegas was a vibrant tapestry of inspiration and decadence that ultimately shaped who I am today.
The Sands, an iconic symbol of old Vegas, was a place where history was made and dreams spun like smoke at a poker table. With the arrival of the Mirage, a new era began, bringing enchanting volcanoes and lush landscapes that turned fantasy into reality. Now, both the Sands and the Mirage have been torn down, leaving behind only memories of their glory.
Amidst the glimmering lights, I learned about life’s complexities. The juxtaposition of wealth and poverty taught me resilience and the strength of the human spirit. Each visit to the opulent casinos and dazzling performances instilled a sense of wonder, while the realities of those living in the shadows offered invaluable lessons.
I can still hear the Go-Go’s playing in the background on the radio in the car—one of the hottest bands of the time, their upbeat tunes perfectly capturing the spirit of those carefree days.
These videos are cherished artifacts, reminders of a world that once thrived and has transformed over time. Though the Sands and the Mirage may no longer stand, my memories remain—testaments to my roots and the experiences that shaped my worldview.
Las Vegas in the 70s and 80s was a tapestry of vibrant colors and stark contrasts, filled with adventure and dreams. I’m grateful for the lessons learned and the girl I once was, for they’ve woven the fabric of the woman I am today.
Though places may fade, the experiences we gather along the way become the cornerstone of who we are. The spirit of Las Vegas will forever be a part of me—a mirage that continues to inspire my journey. 💖✨
