Reflections of a Mirage from a Vegas Girl 🌅✨ It’s December 1989, and I’ve just received my first video camera as a present. The Mirage Hotel and Casino has just opened its doors in Las Vegas, and there’s nothing quite like it at the time. As I sift through old video clips, I’m transported back to my childhood in the 70s and 80s—a time when Las Vegas was a vibrant tapestry of inspiration and decadence that ultimately shaped who I am today. The Sands, an iconic symbol of old Vegas, was a place where history was made and dreams spun like smoke at a poker table. With the arrival of the Mirage, a new era began, bringing enchanting volcanoes and lush landscapes that turned fantasy into reality. Now, both the Sands and the Mirage have been torn down, leaving behind only memories of their glory. Amidst the glimmering lights, I learned about life’s complexities. The juxtaposition of wealth and poverty taught me resilience and the strength of the human spirit. Each visit to the opulent casinos and dazzling performances instilled a sense of wonder, while the realities of those living in the shadows offered invaluable lessons. I can still hear the Go-Go’s playing in the background on the radio in the car—one of the hottest bands of the time, their upbeat tunes perfectly capturing the spirit of those carefree days. These videos are cherished artifacts, reminders of a world that once thrived and has transformed over time. Though the Sands and the Mirage may no longer stand, my memories remain—testaments to my roots and the experiences that shaped my worldview. Las Vegas in the 70s and 80s was a tapestry of vibrant colors and stark contrasts, filled with adventure and dreams. I’m grateful for the lessons learned and the girl I once was, for they’ve woven the fabric of the woman I am today. I don’t know their names on Instagram. Working on an Arthur Miller play was a truly unique experience. His writing is so profound and deep, and bringing this meaningful story to life night after night was unlike anything else. I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of such a powerful piece of theater. This production, born from our acting class and put together on a shoestring budget, turned into a huge success that exceeded all our expectations. The memories from those performances still warm my heart, and I’m beyond grateful for the talented cast I had the privilege to work with. Looking back at these photos makes me wish we could do it all over again. Who knows? While in Las Vegas, my dear friend @lolabrgeda asked if I could step in as a replacement dancer for a show that was hitting the road to Houston. Talk about being thrown into the deep end! 😳 We drove cross-country, and once I arrived, I had just five days to learn the entire show. In the midst of rehearsals, I found myself wrestling with fear and uncertainty. Midnight practices became my norm as I desperately tried to memorize every line and move while keeping my nerves at bay. I was scared, I felt lost, but every single day, I pushed myself to persevere. What made this journey even more special was sharing it with my friend—who not only brought me into the show but also stood by my side, helping me learn every detail. Our bond is a testament to how true friendship can inspire and uplift you through life’s challenges. 💖 Looking back at that video, I see the grit and tenacity that fueled me, even when I doubted myself. It was one of the most grueling experiences of my life, but it taught me that we are capable of so much more than we think.
