Artist Statement:
Black Woman Rest is a ten-minute visual meditation, filmed amidst the serene landscapes of Joshua Tree, inspired by Tricia Hersey’s Nap Ministry. This project invites the audience to hold space for the sacred act of Black women resting. Inspired by Patrisse Cullors’ Abolitionist Meditations practice, it challenges the pervasive notion that rest is a luxury, not a right, for Black women. In a society that often demands relentless productivity, Black Woman Rest serves as a call to presence, urging viewers to acknowledge and honor the necessity of rest and restoration. This billboard project is not merely a visual experience; it is a meditative journey asking for a collective recognition of the importance of rest, especially for Black women. Through this piece, Cullors seeks to create a space for reflection, healing, and solidarity, as we collectively affirm the power and necessity of rest.
