Part 2/3 and closing. ( please excuse my pronunciation and audio level change. I recorded various parts at different days) 🫂 For radioactive hot particles: – Certain fungi species, particularly those with melanin (like Cladosporium sphaerospermum), can absorb and accumulate radionuclides – The fungi convert radiation into chemical energy through radiosynthesis – They use enzymes to bind to heavy metals and radioactive elements, effectively immobilizing them – Examples include fungi found thriving at Chernobyl that actually grow toward radiation sources For plastics: – Fungi secrete powerful enzymes (primarily laccases, peroxidases, and manganese peroxidases) – These enzymes break the complex polymer chains in plastics into simpler compounds – Species like Pestalotiopsis microspora can degrade polyurethane, while Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushrooms) can break down various plastics – The process transforms the plastic into compounds the fungi can use as a carbon source The effectiveness varies by fungal species and contamination type, with research still ongoing to optimize these processes for environmental cleanup. Truly magical…
PART 1 How Oyster Mushrooms Clean Fire-Damaged Areas 1. Breaking down toxic compounds: Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus species) can break down various harmful chemicals that may be present after wildfires, including: * Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released from burning materials * Petroleum hydrocarbons from burned structures and vehicles * Certain heavy metals that become more mobile after fires 2. Soil restoration: The mycelium (underground fungal network) of oyster mushrooms helps rebuild soil structure damaged by intense heat and fire retardants. 3. Erosion control: Mycelium networks can hold soil particles together, reducing post-fire erosion that often leads to mudslides in LA’s hilly terrain. 4. Water filtration: As runoff passes through areas where oyster mushrooms are growing, their mycelium can filter and capture contaminants before they reach waterways. 🤲

Join us as we team up with local Topanga mushroom man, @farrandwild, for a guided foray in Topanga Canyon to mingle with local mushrooms and fungi. 🍄🟫 Together, we will explore the landscape and learn to cultivate our mushroom eyes and ears (yes, ears!). 🌱 This class will include: •A tour in nature to find & observe wild mushrooms •The ethics of mushroom hunting •Understanding the diagnostics of identification (edibles, medicinals, toxic, and lookalikes) •How to read the landscape of mushroom ecology •Cultivating our relationship to the land with reciprocity •A brief mushroom cooking & tasting demo Grab your spot at the 🔗 in our b i o 🍄🌲✨
🌾 Class announcement 🌾 Join us for a guided plant identification walk on March 2nd led by Dirt Girls Co-Founder, Herbalist, and Naturalist Jaskrit Bhalla. Together, we will learn how to identify local native, invasive, edible, & medicinal plant species. We will immerse ourselves in local ecology, discuss the ethnobotanical history of wild plants, and spend time connecting with the Earth. 🌳 We are offering 4 free tickets to anyone affected by the LA fires, including displaced individuals & first responders. Sign up at the 🔗 in b i o, see you there.
