She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.” Alone in a museum, and I find that I am never just searching for beauty – I am searching for something that lingers, that unsettles, that stays with me long after I’ve left. Because art, much like life, is not meant to be merely admired in passing for its beauty, but to be felt; to stir, to linger, to leave something behind. Musings from a morning at The Met, where I had the rare chance to wander (nearly) alone before opening. It was also a chance to view the Caspar David Friedrich exhibit, on display from now through May 11th. I didn’t want to spoil it by sharing too many images of the collection itself, but suffice it to say that it’s well worth going to see while you can. My favorite was ‘Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog’ which I could have stared at for ages. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way, in how I see myself in the way she moves through the world – curious, observant, and most alive in the quiet moments. She finds magic in solitude, in the richness of her inner world, and so to do I. But even she must learn when to step beyond it, and when to reach for something more. And so, when I feel myself retreating inward, I remind myself: my inner world is just as full, just as vivid.
