I’m reminded of this every time I walk by the main library at Harvard. Its designer is Horace Trumbauer but few know that the chief designer was the great Julian Abele.
Why does that matter?
Abele was one of the first Black architects. He designed much of Duke University’s campus at a time when segregation meant that he couldn’t even step foot on its grounds.
The ground carries these stories, and knowing them, saluting them is part of the narrative work to honor what it has taken for all to belong and all to count here in the United States. | Posted on 07/Apr/2025 18:30:43
