Sarah Lewis Instagram – It’s not time to be silent. It is time to stand up and ask: When are we going to give up the lie? When are we going to give up the lie that there is any basis for the idea of superiority on the basis of race? What will it take?
Ignorance is not simply the root of racism. Ignorance is necessary for racism to exist because once you know the facts, you have to act. It is due to ignorance that people believe, for example, that slavery could ever be taught as beneficial for the skills it taught the enslaved, distorting this history of historic human rights violations and injustice.
The question is how. How do you come to know the truth? We don’t act because of laws and legislation alone. The vehicle for justice is more than law, but facts delivered by education, yes, and culture—from monuments to acts of good trouble on the Senate floor.
The work of culture to transform narratives, alongside law, is the latest and perhaps most critical chapter in the civil and human rights movement around the world today. And for this work, we all must continue our work with resolve.
It was an honor to deliver the keynote at the UN General Assembly for the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The work continues.
When are we going to give up the lie? What will it take? Sound off in the comments. I’d love to hear your thoughts! | Posted on 04/Apr/2025 18:32:57
