This April, we’re spotlighting six talented women who are rewriting the rules of cinema, one film at a time. Shahana Goswami is no stranger to the spotlight – she’s been a part of numerous acclaimed films and series that continue to be watched and re-watched, including Rock On!!, Firaaq, Midnight’s Children, Bombay Begums, and A Suitable Boy, among others. More recently, though, one film took her to the Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong, where she won the Best Actress title. Written and directed by Sandhya Suri, Santosh tells the story of Santosh Saini – played by Goswami – a widow who inherits her late husband’s position as a police constable. Santosh is not your regular heroic character – she’s just another person who is part of the system and who’s trying to figure her way out. “She’s not some sort of an oppressed soul who then becomes the victor. I recently had a very insightful conversation with the supremely talented @shahanagoswami We touched upon several topics such as her most challenging role till date, the process and way in which a film is shot (which is not necessarily by following the narrative and demands actors to follow a very irregular emotional graph of the character), the technicalities of shooting intimate scenes in a film and much more. As an actor who is comfortable with her sexuality, Shahana has no qualms in shooting love making scenes if and when required for a script. According to Shahana, only mad people who understand the nature of the job and are able to switch on and off as and when required, can be actors.
