“He is not here; he has risen, as he said. Come and see the place where the Lord was laid.” -Matthew 28:6
Love beats death. It’s truly the best and most beautiful story that I know. There’s a powerful part of the Easter Liturgy at our church that is read during the sunrise service that says, “Hell grasped a corpse and met the face of God.”
The backwards and upside down way that God wrote this story is astounding to me. It isn’t a flashy show of power or an epic battle in the way we see them played out in the movies. Instead , the most powerful one bent low, washed people’s feet, healed their sickness, saw them in the middle of the mess of their stories , and lavishly loved them.
Jesus lays down His life and enters into every broken, dark, awful part of our stories, our mistakes, our heartache, our grief, and our sorrow. He enters death itself and walks out of it 3 days later. “He is risen, just as he said!”And while the way God overcomes looks like a losing story there for a second, it changed everything .
Love never fails. Death isn’t the end! Jesus walked through it and back out into life again , so we can know we are never alone in the pain and suffering of being human, AND so we , in the middle of the darkest nights of our own stories, can hold onto the scarred hand of Jesus and remember that the suffering is never the end.
