I love the imagery of this verse. I am grateful for the season of Lent, when we’re invited to let go of what is not serving us, of what is not bringing goodness in our life. Lent feels like an invitation to take a look at our lives, as we’d take a took in a mirror to see what needs tending to. Usually when I look in a mirror, I realize I have NOT brushed my hair in quite a while. Tangles need tending. Often my face will be covered in dirt after working in the garden, and I won’t know it until I take a moment to look at my reflection.
When I read this verse during this season of Lent, I found myself asking some really beautiful questions. What is being reflected in my life? And what does that say about what’s happening in my heart? Often, if I am grounding my heart in my to- do lists, in my successes or failures as a mom or artist or human, or in worry about what I cannot control or what others think of me….my face carries the worry, my body carries the stress in my shoulders and lower back…it all starts to get a little tight, and my words can tend to come out fast and impatient with my kids and my husband. But if my heart is grounded in God’s love, it often reflects that love, worry can’t hang around for too long, and with my identity grounded in a Love that will never change or leave me, I’m way less worried about what others think of me, and get to then spend my time and energy pouring that love out into the world.
