Erika Eleniak Instagram – Baywatch was an American television series that aired from 1989 to 2001. The series was created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Gregory J. Bonann, who produced the show throughout its 11-season run. The first season (1989–90) aired on NBC in the United States and was canceled after only one season. Low ratings and the series’ production company going bankrupt led NBC to lose faith in Baywatch. The series was revived through syndication in the United States and the sale of foreign viewing rights. A few years after its revival the show became the most-watched television series in the world, with a weekly audience of over 1.1 billion viewers despite consistently negative critical reviews, earning it a reputation as a pop cultural phenomenon and frequent source of allusion and parody.
The TV show follows a team of lifeguards led by Lieutenant Mitch Buchannon (David Hasselhoff) who save lives, deal with personal dramas, fight crime and participate in over the top adventures on a daily basis on a beach in Los Angeles, California (S1-9) and Hawaii (S10-11).
The series’ image of a sunny and beautiful California beach filled with young, beautiful people attracted many TV viewers in northern Europe. But in reality, many of the series’ actors experienced a much colder environment, which was also not as well paid. Furthermore, it was certainly inconvenient for the female actors to constantly walk around in swimsuits and fulfill the weight clause in their contracts.
