“East meets West. There is something about the decades when Western culture just began to influence Japan that I find very intriguing. Men started wearing suits, while women found new ways to style their kimonos and wear their hair. Things like posters and packaging straddled the aesthetics of two different worlds. Music combined traditional melodies with Western instruments, and interesting fusion foods like rice-filled omulets and tempura shrimp started gracing menus. As a foreigner living in Japan for over 10 years, I feel a connection to the juxtaposition of two different cultures, and I’ve slowly begun a collection of things from that era- antique knick-knacks, old photos and albums, books, and magazines. What began as a casual interest in bygone days has come to influence me in surprising ways from fashion to interior decorating, and I hope to discover more interesting elements of the past that I can take inspiration from and emulate today.”
