This was my first time working with an apparel client, and it was tricky because I had to create an artwork that pleased the design office, the apparel brand, and Mister Donut. I created a lot of proposals digitally on my iPad, narrowed down the design, then photographed the actual donuts for reference for the final illustration. This piece features a cup of coffee with their Golden Chocolate and Choco Fashioned donut and is actually one of two illustrations that they commissioned. I’ll be posting the other one in June, so stay tuned! The shirts were actually released in January, and they sold really well. Sakura Tart 桜タルト 🌸🥧🌸🥧🌸🥧🌸🥧🌸🥧🌸🥧🌸🥧 Continuing the seasonal sakura pieces, here is a beautiful sakura tart that I purchased in Tokyu Food Show, a shopping center that is filled with all sorts of take-away desserts. This was from a shop called Gateaux de Voyage, and the visual was so cute that I thought it’d be perfect to paint. This tart had a custard crust, raspberry paste, sakura sponge cake, sakura cream, and was topped with a salt-preserved sakura flower. This piece is a collaboration with @suki___jp , which is dedicated to showcasing people and the different things they like (suki) about Japan. In my case, we created three different videos, and one was about food in Japan and how it tied to my food illustration work. They came and visited my studio to film some of the painting process, and made the reel super aesthetic. There is something about the decades when Western culture just began to influence Japan that I find very intriguing. Men started wearing suits, while women found new ways to style their kimonos and wear their hair. Things like posters and packaging straddled the aesthetics of two different worlds. Music combined traditional melodies with Western instruments, and interesting fusion foods like rice-filled omulets and tempura shrimp started gracing menus. As a foreigner living in Japan for over 10 years, I feel a connection to the juxtaposition of two different cultures, and I’ve slowly begun a collection of things from that era- antique knick-knacks, old photos and albums, books, and magazines. What began as a casual interest in bygone days has come to influence me in surprising ways from fashion to interior decorating, and I hope to discover more interesting elements of the past that I can take inspiration from and emulate today.” SUKI is an online media platform created in Japan that showcases the every day “SUKI (=favorites, like, love)” of people living in Japan.
