I’ve been a huge fan of Melanie for a long time. When I read her books a few years ago, I felt like she’d given me the language to express the disillusionment I felt over the way society treats animals, and to communicate those feelings from a place of integrity rather than ego. There were few people I’d encountered who managed to hold space for people, and their psychological blocks to embracing veganism without diminishing the suffering of animals. She also disarmed me with a comment about our website for The ChickPeeps. She said it was ‘one of the most beautiful websites’ she’d come across. I remember being so surprised and thrilled by that remark because people don’t usually comment on something ‘beautiful’ in work emails, as beauty is still regarded as kind of vacuous and unimportant. The comment made me like her even more as a person because I felt it showed that however clever, prolific and intellectual she clearly was, she also understood the importance of simple things, like stopping to smell the roses 🌹
Fast forward a few years later and Melanie and I, and the truly top notch team at @beyondcarnism have developed a podcast about navigating the balance between inner and social transformation; between mental health and the health of our external world, because we believe the state of our mental health is often a reflection of the state of our environment, and vice versa, and it’s impossible to fix one independent of the other. It’s a podcast that incorporates animal rights but looks beyond that issue at the much bigger picture. As always with podcast hosting, I’m humbled by what I’ve learned and how I’ve had to remind myself to listen and surrender to the fact that I don’t always have the right answer. We hope this podcast will be more of an ongoing conversation than a definitive guide to being just, and just being. 💫
