Some new photos and words of me in @the_italian_reve 💜 Thank you Maria and her team at @the_italian_reve for the moment of introspection which has organised my thoughts of late better than any psychoanalyst or psychic, or whomever could! I always learn something about myself from interviews. It jarred me a bit to read the intro for this and read quite how obsessed with doing things my own way I am, and how glaringly obvious that is in my words. I guess I thought I hid it better. Guess not… Anywayyy, enough navel-gazing, I’m going to embrace this tyrannical bitch energy and get some things done today…💥 Images by @johnnycarrano_ Styling by @alexandriastylist Hair by @davidebarbieri_ Make-up by @wendyturnermakeup #italianreve

Thank you for the birthday wishes! ♥️🥲🙏🏻 Thank you to the people, animals, places and things that give my daily life meaning. Especially the people 💞 That very much includes my followers and Substack community who have encouraged and inspired me to keep dreaming & creating on days it feels meaningless. I promise to show up for you more this coming year 📃 🎭❤️🔥 Special thanks also to my hair for hanging on to my head despite the ravages I have put you through this year lol. I would recommend wigs instead for fellow moody bitches. 💁🏼♀️
I’m delighted to share the latest episode of @justbeingspod podcast is with the wonderful @thisisbwright 😍 Bonnie joins me for our final ep of season 1 to chat about her book, ‘Go Gently: Actionable Steps to Nurture Yourself and the Planet’ and her art & activism today. 📖🎙️ I was very excited to speak to Bonnie in more depth about her book and the community she has created in @gogently.earth I’ve learned SO much from her book and videos, both in terms of practical, sustainability lifestyle tips and an overarching outlook that has shifted my approach to life & activism. Powerful stuff; I had lots of questions! For Bonnie, going gently means combining action with care – she reveals how she softened her approach to climate advocacy as she came to understand the benefits of giving people space to make their advocacy personal and sustainable. 💕 And for the HP fans, Bonnie and I chatted about our love for the characters we played and how they shaped us respectively. I loved hearing her reflect on the ways is which she admired Ginny and why she believes the Weasley family are eco-conscious! 🌏 Follow us on @justbeingspod for more 🎧 Link to episodes in my bio 💛 #JustBeingsPodcast #GoGently
Fern Malo Puff 🥰 It’s been a long week of witnessing a lot of animals in distress & captivity 😮💨 so I thought I would share my clan relaxing and enjoying the moment. I wish it could be this simple for all animals.

Last month in the park with Malo 🌳Yes so I have a dog in my life now! She came with a man included, best 2 for 1 deal I’ve ever come across 🙂♥️ I never really took to dogs before, I found their neediness exhausting and a bit pitiful – looking back I think I probably identified too closely with their need to be liked and affirmed, a quality I found repulsive in myself 😬 But Malo has changed this for me, I’ve become very enamoured with her naive trust that she will be loved in every room she bounds into, her enthusiasm for the mornings and her sweet unguarded heart. Dogs are very pure and uncomplicated. I also deeply appreciate how much they help with small talk 😅 I get such anxiety about talking to strangers, I don’t even know why but it’s gotten a lot worse since lockdown and I’m no stranger to taking very long routes home to avoid the agony of meandering chit chat with neighbours. Having a dog is brilliant because you don’t even have to make direct eye contact, you just smile at their dog and compliment their manner/coat and you get to know their dog first and then the rest just flows! I bet some people have children to deflect excruciating small talk and painful introspection about themselves. When really all you need is a dog. ✅
“If anyone understood loneliness, the moon would.” 🌝 I love that quote from ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’. 📖 8/8 Spent the day in Galway recording a voiceover for an animated film 🎤 interpreting directions like ‘imagine you’re being sucked backwards into a worm and compressed to a tiny point of light’ and being invited to scream ‘as loud and as long as you like!!’. And I realised: none of us scream as much as we ought to. It’s total madness that we can wait for years and years for formal permission to scream, when you can just head to a quiet place in nature and…scream! Was a good day 💙
“O commemorate me where there is water, Canal Water preferably, so stilly Greeny at the heart of summer.” 🌿 🌅 It was an honour to to read one of Patrick Kavanagh’s poems for @claddaghrecords remastered version of the great poet’s recordings, ‘Almost Everything’. It’s a double album, consisting of the original recordings read by Patrick Kavanagh himself, and a new collection read by some well known Irish artists. I’ve never been a big fan of poetry, especially at school. I like when people use words to make sense of & illustrate their deepest feelings, and it often feels like poets exploit language to the opposite effect. The tidy construction of words feels a bit too artful and calculated, like poets are trying to exclude readers with their cleverness. My own personal preference/issues! And yet! I always, always looked forward to the Patrick Kavanagh section on the leaving cert syllabus. His language was simple, evocative and full of nostalgic & mythical images that made the poems more sensory than intellectual. Of course, they are still literature, you still have to read them a few times and look up the references!! But I do think you can dislike poetry and love Patrick Kavanagh’s poems. That’s my experience anyway 🙂 The album is out now on claddaghrecords.com @claddaghrecords #AlmostEverything #PatrickKavanagh

A lucky little gnome I was given by a fan named Marlène when I was visiting Montpellier last month. I never got to thank her so I thought I would post it as it gives me soooo much joy 🥰Tiny little weeny things like make me so happy. The idea that in this ridiculous world where you wake up to an unfathomable number of problems and you have to decide which one to tackle today, someone somewhere decided ‘I’m gonna make the tiniest gnome ever and that will be my contribution to humanity today 😀’ is so fucking sweet! It’s absurd and brilliant to make something this small. It got me thinking about art class when I was younger. We’d be given these huge startlingly white sheets of paper and told to draw whatever. I got a lot of encouragement for my enthusiasm for these drawing sessions but there was one consistent criticism that bothered me: ‘everything is too small. You have the whole sheet of paper, why not use this space?’ I’d look at the rest of the page and feel so much stress, all these blank white expanses that I’d never have the time to fill with colours as the small detailed drawings I did took so, so much time. The thought of taking on the whole page made me want to cry. I think that’s how I feel about the world most days so it’s best to just focus on one tiny detail and give it my fullest attention. So small things are very stabilising. Thank you Marlène for this moment of joy and stability ♥️ And I’m sorry I don’t post more of these things I get from people. I always mean to but then I overthink the captions and don’t get round to it. I am already finding this ‘post one thing a day challenge’ a CHALLENGE but it is helping me break the habit of overthinking. So onwards!
I am ✨ excited and delighted ✨ to share with you all that I am co-hosting a new podcast called Just Beings @justbeingspod with the incredible @drmelaniejoy 🎧 The first 2 episodes are out now on wherever you get your podcasts. Link in my bio & on stories. Follow us on @justbeingspod 🙂 I’ve been a huge fan of Melanie for a long time. When I read her books a few years ago, I felt like she’d given me the language to express the disillusionment I felt over the way society treats animals, and to communicate those feelings from a place of integrity rather than ego. There were few people I’d encountered who managed to hold space for people, and their psychological blocks to embracing veganism without diminishing the suffering of animals. She also disarmed me with a comment about our website for The ChickPeeps. She said it was ‘one of the most beautiful websites’ she’d come across. I remember being so surprised and thrilled by that remark because people don’t usually comment on something ‘beautiful’ in work emails, as beauty is still regarded as kind of vacuous and unimportant. The comment made me like her even more as a person because I felt it showed that however clever, prolific and intellectual she clearly was, she also understood the importance of simple things, like stopping to smell the roses 🌹 Fast forward a few years later and Melanie and I, and the truly top notch team at @beyondcarnism have developed a podcast about navigating the balance between inner and social transformation; between mental health and the health of our external world, because we believe the state of our mental health is often a reflection of the state of our environment, and vice versa, and it’s impossible to fix one independent of the other. It’s a podcast that incorporates animal rights but looks beyond that issue at the much bigger picture. As always with podcast hosting, I’m humbled by what I’ve learned and how I’ve had to remind myself to listen and surrender to the fact that I don’t always have the right answer. We hope this podcast will be more of an ongoing conversation than a definitive guide to being just, and just being. 💫 #JustBeings #JustBeingsPodcast #JustBeingsPod
If you’re looking for something to fill your ears with this weekend…thought I’d give you a summary of some of the most recent episodes of the @justbeingspod podcast✨ Personally one of my favourite Saturday mornings rituals is to line up a few hours of podcasts and to clean my house from top to bottom 🧼 🤓 it’s bizarre what lights your heart up in your 30s… Anywayyyy, here’s the lowdown on the recent @justbeings episodes, I hope you enjoy them 💛 In episode 2, @drmelaniejoy and I have a conversation with the wonderful @lilycole about the importance of nurturing an open dialogue about environmental issues, why animal agriculture is such a controversial topic in the climate change space, and how to choose a cause to focus on when there are so many worthy and important causes in the world. I absolutely loved Lily’s book, it’s really prompted me to slow down and be more considerate in my day to day actions, and has humbled me into listening more intently to others. Always a good practice… In episode 3, Melanie chats to @michaelgervais — a world-renowned expert on the relationship between the mind and human performance — about how to change the way we think so that we can become more present, find personal empowerment, improve the way we respond to challenges and injustices, and, in turn, create a better world for everyone. This episode really crystallised for me the importance of refining my own personal values and not apologising for them. In episode 4, the fantastic @thekoreanvegan joins me and Melanie to discuss how she uses storytelling and food to promote empathy as an antidote to division and conflict, and how she has embraced the challenge of embodying her values while honouring her cultural traditions and protecting her bonds with loved ones. She also blew my mind and made me cackle when she revealed the book that changed her life!! 📖 I did not expect that answer… I hope you find these conversations as informative and inspirational as I did 💭 And enjoy your cleaning or whatever weird rituals you do on weekends 💫 Follow us on @justbeingspod for more! 🎧 Link to episodes in my bio 💛 #JustBeings #JustBeingsPodcast #JustBeingsPod

In our penultimate ep of season 1 of the @justbeingspod podcast, award-winning psychologist @dolly.chugh joins @drmelaniejoy to talk about Dolly’s new book, ‘A More Just Future’. 📖 ‘A More Just Future’ is a guide to unlearning the one-sided history most people in the US were taught. Dolly and Melanie talk about why it’s so important that we learn a fuller and more truthful version of history; how to grapple with the shame, guilt, disbelief, and resistance many of us feel when we recognize and address the injustices in our flawed systems; and how to work toward a more just future without shame or judgment. ⚖️💕 I especially loved their chat about the power of narrative in communicating conceptual ideas, and the writers and storytellers that have awakened their passion for working towards social change. Hope everyone has a nice Friday, perhaps chilling and catching up on your fav podcasts! 😌 Follow us on @justbeingspod for more 🎧 Link to episodes in my bio 💛 #JustBeings #JustBeingsPodcast #JustBeingsPod #DollyChugh
