It was an honour to to read one of Patrick Kavanagh’s poems for @claddaghrecords remastered version of the great poet’s recordings, ‘Almost Everything’. It’s a double album, consisting of the original recordings read by Patrick Kavanagh himself, and a new collection read by some well known Irish artists.
I’ve never been a big fan of poetry, especially at school. I like when people use words to make sense of & illustrate their deepest feelings, and it often feels like poets exploit language to the opposite effect. The tidy construction of words feels a bit too artful and calculated, like poets are trying to exclude readers with their cleverness. My own personal preference/issues! And yet! I always, always looked forward to the Patrick Kavanagh section on the leaving cert syllabus. His language was simple, evocative and full of nostalgic & mythical images that made the poems more sensory than intellectual. Of course, they are still literature, you still have to read them a few times and look up the references!! But I do think you can dislike poetry and love Patrick Kavanagh’s poems. That’s my experience anyway 🙂
The album is out now on claddaghrecords.com @claddaghrecords
