Climbing in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), the unceded, ancestral, and occupied, traditional lands of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Salílwata? (Tsleil-Watuth) Nations of the Coast Salish peoples, has been nothing short of nourishing. Staying long enough to truly listen to the landscape has deepened my sense of reverence for this place. The forests here feel alive in a way I’ve rarely experienced—towering firs, cedars, and spruces cloaked in usnea, whispering of time far older than me. To walk among them is to feel small in the best way possible, witnessing the perpetual cycles of decay giving fruit to the abundance of regeneration is a reminder of the bittersweet endings in my own life that give room for new streams of experiences to emerge~ Summer heat drew me to the rushing waters of Ashlu Creek, its glacial streams carving striated riverbed boulders and washing away the doldrums of still air. In Chinese and Japanese pictographic characters, the combination of mountains and rivers translates to landscape: 山水. And with each surge of water, each pull on stone, the season slowly shifted. Autumn arrived with crisp air cooling the rock, every climb becoming a ceremony—each cut of skin, each movement, an offering of gratitude. Just as the salmon return to the Mamquam, leaving their bodies so the next generation may thrive, I too feel the call to come back. To give and receive from this land, its waters, its rock, and its people is a gift I’ll keep chasing. 🤎 📸: @taylor._shaffer #arcteryx

岩道Iwa-Dō 🌌 🌰a long overdue resurfacing to this digital platform🕳️ at this year’s @arcteryxacademy , I had the pleasure of facilitating a more experimental workshop on an inquiry I’ve personally been exploring/ practicing! Here’s a snippet: “IWA-do : In Japanese, “iwa” (岩) means stone, and “dō” (道) means the path. Iwa-dō is a specific path towards climbing, and today’s exploration will be informed by the Zen Buddhist practice zazen and eye rock gazing, followed by a collaborative poetry exercise to give language to the collective embodied sensations that are roused. This guide is meant to help you engage in the practice of living out the Japanese proverb ichi-go, ichi-e (一期一会), meaning one time, one encounter. We live in the ever-flowing single moment. Each breath is a chance to live anew. Each day spent with rocks will never be the same, given variations in geology, human non-human participants, weather, season in life, and so forth. A deep awareness of the unrepeatable nature of a moment offers insight and discoveries in the seemingly mundane. We’ll explore perspective shifts; by looking outwards, we can zoom in, see the rock in its myopic granularity, contemplate its expansive geologic history and the billions of years of stories embedded into the stone. The second exploration is inwards, towards what sensations and thoughts the experience of being in dialogue with the stone spurs from the deepest wellsprings of yourself. It’s beautiful that we can play on ancient bits of celestial matter! The outpouring of your poetic words are an offering of reverence for this experience that will never occur in the same way again.” 🍥 was overwhelmed by the vulnerability amongst the participants and the rawness of the collaborative poem that we concluded with as each person read aloud their favorite line they penned in reflection of the day 🍥 If this sparks an urge to sample these perspective shifts with stone, you can peruse the guide via the link in my bio to print it out & to try for yourself ! 🧭 Deep bows to friends for the support 💟 @alexfwebb @cyrenaly @rocks.ca @noahsahady 📸@vic_wells And many thanks for the trust on this one 🪹 @arcteryx

Professional climber Ashima Shiraishi’s (@ashimashiraishi) storied career began after a serendipitous encounter with a free bouldering wall in New York City’s Central Park. “If climbing wasn’t free at Central Park,” says Ashima, “I wouldn’t be where I am.” Now, she and her friends are breaking down the financial and cultural barriers to climbing with ALL RISE—an organization with a simple goal: make climbing more accessible. Watch the full film through our link in bio. #nowasteddays #SummerofClimb #arcteryx
🍎ALL RISE FEST NYC! (JUNE 8th, 2024) As some of you may know, I’ve been involved in the founding of @AllRiseOutdoors, an experimental organization whose mission is to make the outdoors more accessible, and to bridge ties between climbing, community and culture. Although quite nebulous and broad in scope against the complexities of social injustices that are deeply entrenched on a systemic level, our multifaceted approach hopes to nurture the links amongst wide-ranging forms of community nourishment. The jumping off point has been centered around climbing… but in the four years since it’s inception, it’s been exciting to think more imaginatively of the interwoven threads between seemingly disparate worlds that are interdependent and uniquely integral to meet the needs of differing communities. Caring deeply about climbing can feel quite futile and superficial when thinking of societal issues at hand but the act of facilitating moments of interaction and collective joy feel regenerative and subversive in a time of pervasive alienation. Our public-facing events, the lively All Rise Fests, have taken place in Long Beach, Berkeley, Chicago, Toronto and now….. New York City (my hometown-yay) ! ALL RISE FEST is a mishmash of an all-levels climbing competition, food, music, art, and most importantly, a meeting place to bask in the beautiful frenzy of people coming together to simultaneously be participants and co-creators in something that is experienced IRL with others. In the ethos of experimentation, the bouldering competition format is unconventionally volume based (the goal is to do ALL of the climbs in the gym), and there’s no shortage of absurdity. It’s difficult to capture the energy of these events with the limitations of language so come by in person if you’re around and maybe you’ll make a friend… link in bio for tix 🙂 Most psyched for this event’s music lineup! 😆 let’s mosh to @kumo99_🫶 @museumofloveband @kumo99_ @ife.radio @thatboiakathatboi @gaulplus @farmtactics 💙 @wearebraindead @arcteryx @long_beach_rising | 📸 by @nathanialbairdsaccount @andrew.won @rocks.ca @deanliaw
