🍎ALL RISE FEST NYC! (JUNE 8th, 2024) As some of you may know, I’ve been involved in the founding of @AllRiseOutdoors, an experimental organization whose mission is to make the outdoors more accessible, and to bridge ties between climbing, community and culture. Although quite nebulous and broad in scope against the complexities of social injustices that are deeply entrenched on a systemic level, our multifaceted approach hopes to nurture the links amongst wide-ranging forms of community nourishment. The jumping off point has been centered around climbing… but in the four years since it’s inception, it’s been exciting to think more imaginatively of the interwoven threads between seemingly disparate worlds that are interdependent and uniquely integral to meet the needs of differing communities. Caring deeply about climbing can feel quite futile and superficial when thinking of societal issues at hand but the act of facilitating moments of interaction and collective joy feel regenerative and subversive in a time of pervasive alienation. Our public-facing events, the lively All Rise Fests, have taken place in Long Beach, Berkeley, Chicago, Toronto and now….. New York City (my hometown-yay) ! ALL RISE FEST is a mishmash of an all-levels climbing competition, food, music, art, and most importantly, a meeting place to bask in the beautiful frenzy of people coming together to simultaneously be participants and co-creators in something that is experienced IRL with others. In the ethos of experimentation, the bouldering competition format is unconventionally volume based (the goal is to do ALL of the climbs in the gym), and there’s no shortage of absurdity. It’s difficult to capture the energy of these events with the limitations of language so come by in person if you’re around and maybe you’ll make a friend… link in bio for tix 🙂 Most psyched for this event’s music lineup! 😆 let’s mosh to @kumo99_🫶 @museumofloveband @kumo99_ @ife.radio @thatboiakathatboi @gaulplus @farmtactics 💙 @wearebraindead @arcteryx @long_beach_rising | 📸 by @nathanialbairdsaccount @andrew.won @rocks.ca @deanliaw

(pt 2) Humbled by this rock, I was struck by both the resilience and frailty of the corporeal body. Frailty in that, I felt dwarfed by the stone by both scales of time and structural strength. The softness and smallness of my body stark against the rapakivi granite. But then, the other truth of the supple body emerges against the rock — the incredible capacity to renew itself. While the rock didn’t hug me back this time, when the time is ripe, it might. Feelin’ endlessly grateful for the people and the land I could count on to hug in its place🫂 Grateful to have been a guest in the land of 180,000 lakes and lush living carpets! The blankets of byrophytes covering rocks and the whiskers of beard lichens hanging from the pines added some whimsy and awe to our cold climbing days. kiitos! ~ author’s note from Twice Alive by Forrest Gander ~ Security of the Forest by Pirkko Siltala

The Koan of The Globalist🫀 (pt 1) A surge of endorphins took over as I watched my ankle torque close to my face and my fingers nestle in the divot My spine snaked in sync with my limbs to position my body directionally, the edge only a hold when my arm is suspended at 4 o’clock The pretzeling of the body, a position beyond my normal range of body movements Stumped on a snatch move out right A quartz crystal caught my eye, a thin sliver, barely protruding from the wall, I wanted to listen to that exploratory voice The sharp grains bore into my skin Just enough to keep me on I was overcome with exhilaration from seeing possibility in a razor edge a streak of rebellion and subversion to find an alternative method to show a different way The final slaps near the top of the bulge thwarted me No matter how much I compressed, I was shy of the lip what amount of hugging would be enough for the rock to grant me access? My friend said she hugged boulders for my birthday and the thought of it delighted me So I will hug compassionately till the rock hugs back 🖤 The day was dry and wintry, far colder than what my rough skin and cold extremities had hoped for. I repeated the words my dad used to say when I needed some extra support “今日しかない“, meaning “you’ve only got today”, hoping willpower would overpower the shivering. The flame sparked by this climb veiled me with a sense of invincibility, and perhaps numbed my mind to the physical body numbing. I noticed the reflective sheen on my glassy skin but dismissed it in the fervor of having found a new sequence. A sprout of possibility is an immense force, one I followed in order to see this vision through. My natural climbing disposition is overly-reserved, but that day I was channeling someone else who was able to brave the cold. Then, a series of comically dramatic movements: in one second, my body was hugging the rock, then my fingers were ejected off of the crystals, and finally, I found myself under the imposing hull, the world spinning. My reverie of possibility and hard shell cracked against the granite’s rigidity. vid📹: @roberte1 tysm for the many spots and encouraging presence 🙂 @aidan.roberts98

Honored to be part of this Central Park bouldering feature amongst fine company and friends! @nymag @curbed 🫶 (pic #1) My appreciation for this mound of Manhattan schist is woven into my early memories of being mentored by Yuki-san (Rat Rock’s steward / “spiritual godfather” in the late 80s- early 2000s) who expanded my view of play from the Heckscher Playground to the adjacent boulder a few feet away. Grateful for this foundation of viewing climbing as a vertical play-scape 🛝 As the playground serves as an early relational platform of forging social connections with fellow play enthusiasts, so too does the boulder act as a type of conduit through which spatial, social, geological and ecological relations can be established 🕸️ love all the relationships I’ve been able to find thru rocks and the interactions keep growing ! (pic #4) Never thought my Olmsted reference would make it into this piece 😆 so much to pack in here but here’s a lil intro by Robert Smithson in Frederick Law Olmsted and the Dialectical Landscape that’s added depth to my connection with this rock: IMAGINE YOURSELF IN CENTRAL PARK one million years ago. You would be standing on a vast ice sheet, a 4,000-mile glacial wall, as much as 2,000 feet thick. Alone on the vast glacier, you would not sense its slow crushing, scraping, ripping movement as it advanced south, leaving great masses of rock debris in its wake. Under the frozen depths, where the carousel now stands, you would not notice the effect on the bedrock as the glacier dragged itself along. so grateful I get to represent/be part of the vibrant NYC climbing community 💖💖💖💖💖 Big thanks to @cherki for ur tireless persistence in showing this special place in the manyyyy multitudes it contains 🌟 Photos: @cherkis Words: @cliomiso
