Hello there, friends!
In case you missed my last letter, it discussed the inspiration behind Hades, my 7 months of solitude in the countryside during covid, and thus, my relationship with descent and eventual, long-awaited-upon ascent. Being alone, I had so much time to think and feel — arguably too much, but it was an exciting petri dish for songwriting and a necessary one, too. I began to cultivate a collection of songs (and continue to do so) revolving around themes of light and shadow and how one cannot exist without the other.
I am delighted to announce I will be sharing a small selection of these songs, performed live at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, within the coming weeks. They’re drenched in longing, death, Spring, loneliness, first love, then heartbreak, and how there’s such aching sweetness and tender grief within all of it.
I’m quite convinced we’ve all had a strange and challenging time over the last 5 years… can you believe it’s been 5 years since 2020? There’s nothing unique about this grief of mine. We’re all feeling it. I just think it’s important we don’t shy away from it, though it’s equally as important not to get lost in it either. That’s a challenge in and of its own. So many things are about to occur! As we enter a new year, there is an inherent sense of hope, but there is also a sense of dread and despair looming around the inevitability of inauguration day here in the States. These next few months are going to be the coldest and darkest of the year— they always are, but as of the Solstice, we will feel the days getting longer and brighter until Spring arrives. That’s why I wanted to share these songs with you in January of 2025. I’m hoping you will find companions in some of them, as they were and are to me.
