Christina Ochoa Instagram – In honor of #ClimateWeek, posting one of the most inspiring & heartwarming days this year with the local community and children of Fakarava, in French Polynesia. On the 2nd half of #Summit2Sea Expedition I brought 3 close friends & ocean heroes – those I believe consistently make the world a better place with their science, attitude and art (@covascott @chriscameron.cc @andremusgrove) – and we partnered with like-minded souls/brands/orgs: @nani.travels @robertwan.officiel @oceana to give back to the community that so lovingly opened its doors. We discussed our favorite marine animals, played charades and drew them, then played my go-to game of giving them names & backstories… and then mobilized. 💪 We took action, geared up with gloves, and went off to do a beach clean-up around the remote island.
My goal is simple: to make ‘falling in love’ with the ocean easy, & protecting it feel fun. To come naturally… I believe positive interactions and experiences reinforce the message better that fear or shame. What was even more important to me here, was to learn and listen to the locals and not preach. They know these waters. They rely on them for food, work, trade, and transportation… and so listen we did. We “experts” are the ones walking away with a greater perspective, a greater love and awareness… and hopefully they felt heard, and added some extra tools to their kit – should they wish to implement them – to help protect the environment and still honor their community culture.
