Julianne Moore Instagram – In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I want to spotlight the incredible Minister Monica Day, a member of the Everytown Survivor Network, for this week’s #WomanCrushWednesday.
For 16 years, Monica endured an abusive marriage where she was threatened with a firearm. Sadly, her story is far too common. Millions of women have reported having had a gun used against them by an intimate partner as another way to threaten, intimidate, and control, even when the gun is never fired.
The impact of gun violence reached beyond Monica’s marriage. Her teenage daughter was robbed at gunpoint while working a drive-thru shift. Her daughter’s best friend was shot and killed in his own driveway. And her best friend’s son was killed while waiting in line at a convenience store.
These are the stories of gun violence that rarely make headlines, but happen every day. In 2009, Monica founded the Daylight Awareness & Prevention Agency, which supports women affected by gun violence and domestic violence. For years, she’s empowered young women in her community and spoken out about the need to keep guns out of the hands of abusers.
As women, it’s crucial that we have these conversations and protect one another. I’m so grateful for the work that @IamDaylight and so many women like her are doing to end the gun violence epidemic. #WCW
