VICTORY! Today, in a major victory for the gun violence prevention movement and public safety, the Supreme Court upheld ATF’s life-saving rule regulating ghost guns in Bondi v. VanDerStok. Ghost guns look, shoot, and kill like real guns, but up until this rule went into effect, they weren’t treated as such. This decision is a testament to the fact that common-sense regulations that keep our communities safe are absolutely consistent with the Second Amendment. Today, the Supreme Court did the right thing and we are grateful for it. No one should have an untraceable gun bought and built without a background check. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡 @everytown @momsdemand @studentsdemand
Ghost guns are untraceable, unserialized guns that anyone can assemble in minutes without a background check. Last week, in a life-saving decision, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an ATF rule regulating ghost guns like the deadly firearms they are – a huge win for gun safety. Because of this, my #WomanCrushWednesday is Denise Wieck, a ghost gun violence survivor and @MI_MomsDemand volunteer. In 2021, Denise’s teenage son, Guy, was unintentionally shot in the head with a ghost gun by his then-best friend, who was also a teenager. In what Denise and doctors deem a miracle, Guy survived. But he suffers the consequences of the injury to this day, including an epilepsy diagnosis, anxiety, memory issues, PTSD, and the loss of an eye. This hasn’t stopped him or his extraordinary mother Denise from turning their grief into purpose through education and advocacy. Denise has supported Guy in his lawsuit against the shooter and JSD Supply, alleging the company sold the ghost gun kits in question without verifying the shooter’s age or running a background check. She’s a fellow with the Everytown Survivor Network and a leader with Moms Demand Action, advocating for critical gun violence prevention bills in Michigan including a ghost gun ban. Denise is one of many moms, students, and survivors of gun violence across the country that have been sounding the alarm on ghost guns for years. Thankfully, the Supreme Court did the right thing, allowing the life-saving ATF rule to remain in effect and countless communities are undoubtedly safer as a result. Thank you, Denise, for the way you fight for your son and for all of us. Because of you, our country is a safer place. #WCW
My #WomanCrushWednesday is the incredible Anne Thalheimer, a volunteer with @MA_MomsDemand and a member of the Everytown Survivor Network. Anne is also an artist, author, and educator who channels her story into action to end gun violence. Today, Anne and her fellow @MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand volunteers are at the Massachusetts State Capitol, raising their voices for common-sense gun safety laws. For Anne, this fight is personal. When Anne was a student at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, a fellow student brought a gun to campus, killing her professor and a friend and wounding four others. Anne survived, but her life was forever changed. In the wake of that horrible tragedy, she turned her grief into action – Anne fought relentlessly to close the loophole that allowed the shooter to obtain the gun used at her college and after years of advocacy, she won. As Anne continues to push for change, alongside fellow gun safety advocates, I stand with them. Anne, thank you for your courage, your advocacy, and your unwavering dedication to this fight. Because of you, lives are being saved. #WCW
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I want to spotlight the incredible Minister Monica Day, a member of the Everytown Survivor Network, for this week’s #WomanCrushWednesday. For 16 years, Monica endured an abusive marriage where she was threatened with a firearm. Sadly, her story is far too common. Millions of women have reported having had a gun used against them by an intimate partner as another way to threaten, intimidate, and control, even when the gun is never fired. The impact of gun violence reached beyond Monica’s marriage. Her teenage daughter was robbed at gunpoint while working a drive-thru shift. Her daughter’s best friend was shot and killed in his own driveway. And her best friend’s son was killed while waiting in line at a convenience store. These are the stories of gun violence that rarely make headlines, but happen every day. In 2009, Monica founded the Daylight Awareness & Prevention Agency, which supports women affected by gun violence and domestic violence. For years, she’s empowered young women in her community and spoken out about the need to keep guns out of the hands of abusers. As women, it’s crucial that we have these conversations and protect one another. I’m so grateful for the work that @IamDaylight and so many women like her are doing to end the gun violence epidemic. #WCW If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline by calling 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), texting “START” to 88788, or chatting online at thehotline.org.
