This beautiful man has healed wounds in me he did not inflict – simply by being himself. By embodying true masculinity. The kind that is vulnerable, honest and loving. I thought I knew kindness. Love. Patience. Generosity. Care. I thought I knew how to be gentle. And then I met him. Watching him father and love his babies. Honoring and respecting their beautiful mother. Doing everything he can to be absolutely everything everyone needs from him. Finding ways every day to light up the lives of the ones so lucky enough to be loved by him. His benevolence, his priorities, his values, and his honesty are all rooted in love. And as a result, we all feel safe and at ease in his orbit. Thank you for loving me. a moment of 🦋 delight
In the adventures of Huck Finn, Jim is vital to the story, but his perspective is filtered entirely through Huck. He doesn’t get a ton of depth. That’s what makes this so powerful. It corrects the imbalance. James isn’t the version we’re taught in school. He’s brilliant. Secretly literate. Fiercely tender. Hiding his mind in plain sight just to survive. Sometimes, survival is strategy. I think if schools are still going to require Huck Finn then James should be required and read immediately after. 300 pages went by so fast. Easy to see why it won the Pulitzer. This line felt extremely poignant and timely: “Folks be funny lak dat. Dey takes the lies dey want and throws away the truths dat scares ‘em.”
Can’t stop thinking about what a force of nature @mspike is. This play, this performance from her, will stay with me for a very long time. See it @nationaltheatre if you have the chance. I feel so lucky to have experienced it. Bravo! ♥️
