A new day unfolds in strokes of magenta and violet over Kenya’s endless savanna, complete with an unmistakable silhouette. Wildebeests, also known as gnu, are a true oddity of design. Knobbly knees, sloping backs, wild eyes, and bedraggled beards: It all makes for a creature that looks as though it’s been assembled from spare parts. But don’t be fooled by the scrappy appearance and loping gait. Wildebeests have more mettle than most. They are endurance specialists built for the long haul, capable of navigating hundreds of miles of harsh terrain and fending off predatory attacks as they push on.
