Carly Simon Instagram – The first time I read the script of “Working Girl,” I thought of a visual of the Staten Island Ferry crossing over to the isle of Manhattan. The Towers were high over all the other buildings in the Wall Street area and the camera panned to the inside of the ferry. Melanie and Joan Cusack were reading Page Six or some other gossip page of one of the morning papers.
Cutting away to New York, it made me think of a jungle arriving at a church. I knew I wanted a jungle beat. I wrote a melody that reminded me of a hymn and imagined the sounds of drums driving the beat to the mighty and very tall buildings of commerce.
The words “Let the River Run” were borrowed from Joyce or maybe it was referencing the river Liffey which is featured in “Finnigan’s Wake”…I should know, but I forget. “Come the new Jerusalem” was from the book of Revelation or maybe it was from Ulysses. It was a lofty reference supplied for me by my husband and I was thrilled that he knew those things.
When my name was called as the Oscar winner for Best Original Song, I was bedazzled. It was given to me by Sammy Davis Jr. and Gregory Hines. I remembered to thank Mike Nichols (of course) and most of the others involved, but I forgot to thank my hard working handsome manager, John Sykes. Because of that I was embarrassed to return to my seat. I didn’t. I went back to be photographed in the outfit in which I was called out as “Worst Dressed” Oscar winner. But it is gold and I feel it in my heart.
